Principal's Message

June 6, 2013

Dear Ben Franklin Families,

I want to thank all of you for joining us for our Family Picnic on the last day of school.  I enjoyed talking with all of you and serving lunch to each family.  The family picnic is my favorite event of the school year!  As a building principal it is a true joy to look out upon our 12 acres of playground space and see the students and the families enjoying lunch together and reflecting upon all of the great things that we accomplished throughout the school year.

When you drive by our school you will see that we are already preparing the school grounds for next year. The custodians are busy cleaning the classrooms from top to bottom and Mr. Walker has been busy mowing the school property.  The maintenance crew has been power washing the building and they will apply a fresh coat of paint to the outside of the building the week of June 10th.  Mrs. Demko is busy working on the class lists and the registration forms for next year.  There is so much to do in the summer months while the students are enjoying summer vacation; however,  all the this hard work will pay off when the students return for the first day of school.

This year was a true success because of the kind and caring students, families, and staff members!  We are all Bucket Fillers indeed!  These are a few of our school accomplishments from the 2012 – 2013 school year.

  • We collected 237 pounds of Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus, Ohio.
  • We donated over $450 to the Licking County Food Pantry.
  • We continued our partnership with Boeing to host 2 COSI on Wheels days for our students.
  • We were the recipient of the First Class Lend a Helping Hand United Way award.
  • Our Diversity Council sponsored the 1st Annual Spring Carnival.
  • Our students and staff participated in four Walk and Bike to School Days.
  • The staff hosted 600 participants for the family picnic on the last day of school.

This summer:

There are many ways to stay active and involved during the summer months.  Your family is invited to join us here at Ben Franklin for an hour of fun on June 6, 13, 18 & 20.  We will play kickball, basketball, 4 square, tetherball, have relay races and twirl in hula hoops.  Please bring a water bottle and wear tennis shoes.  Snacks will be served at the end of the summer fun session.  I will send a phone call to all the homes the night before each summer fun session to notify you of the time for the summer fun session on the following day.  My goal is to plan our summer fun around the heat and rain.  I look forward to seeing all of you here in the month of June.

I have many fond memories of Newark City Schools, dating back to my school experiences in the NCS district. My wildcat pride dates back to my years as a student at John Clem Elementary, Roosevelt Middle School and Newark High School. I look forward to keeping the Wildcat Pride alive each day of the school year.

I earned by Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio Dominican University in 2003 and my Master of Education degree from Ashland University in 2007.

Before I became the principal of Ben Franklin Elementary, I taught 5th grade and 6th grade. I taught at Kettering Intermediate, West Main Intermediate and Ben Franklin Elementary. Prior to becoming the principal of Ben Franklin Elementary in 2011, I was a district mentor teacher for the Newark City Schools mentoring program.
