The Newark City Schools values each learner’s uniqueness and potential. Educators in our school district are committed to joining parents in understanding and supporting learners. Our district supports more than 1,000 students who have been determined eligible for special education support services.
The Parent Mentor Program is designed to help the parents/guardians of children with known or suspected disabilities learn their legal rights and responsibilities. The program provides parent education, support group to families to form a collaborative relationship with school personnel. Special education services are available for students with learning disabilities, physical, developmental and behavioral handicaps and multiple handicaps. Teachers and counselors provide assessment and guidance for students having special needs. Students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) may be provided with tutoring, or be places in skill-appropriate classes.
Newark City Schools provide related services for students including: School psychology, speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, orientation and mobility specialist and intervention specialists. Students can be served from age 3 to 22. Services are provided, to the maximum extent possible, in the least restrictive environment.
