Curriculum
The Curriculum Department provides leadership for our key mission: increasing student achievement through effective teaching. Elementary (K-5)
Newark City Schools is dedicated to nurturing our students’ language and literacy development guided by principles rooted in the Science of Reading. The Science of Reading is a vast body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. This evidence-based approach ensures that our educational strategies are grounded in the latest research on how children learn to read. By focusing on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, we aim to provide a comprehensive literacy education that empowers our students to succeed academically and beyond. Our commitment is to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to develop strong reading skills and a lifelong love for learning.
We have carefully selected high quality instructional materials to support language and literacy development.
