Superintendent

Superintendent David L. Lewis began his time at Newark City Schools in August 2020.

During his time with NCS, the district purchased the former State Farm Building at 1440 Granville Road. That building now houses NCS preschool, NCS Digital, the high school's Alternative Academy, district professional development space, and a partnership with Junior Achievement of Central Ohio.

The district has brought the Ron Clark Academy's House System to three schools, improving positive behavior outcomes. Districtwide, 4th and 5th grade classes are now departmentalized, letting educators teach in areas where they are most passionate and experienced, while helping students transition to middle school.

The Alternative Academy, launched in fall 2025, helped nearly 40 students graduate in 2026 who may have otherwise fallen behind.

NCS' Workforce Development program began in 2024. The program helps connect high school students to jobs during school, and helps them explore future careers.

Mr. Lewis served for seven years as the Superintendent of the Miami Trace Local Schools in Fayette County. Prior to that, he had been a high school principal and assistant principal and middle school teacher. He and wife Karen have two adult children, one grandchild and another on the way.
