Introducing JJ the Wildcat

“JJ” The Wildcat is making his debut this 2025-26 school year! JJ will officially debut during the first Wildcat home football game, but you might also see him around the district throughout the year. (Video introduction)

Join JJ in cheering on the Wildcats on the field, on the stage and in the classroom.

JJ is named after James “Jim” Quickel, who debuted the Newark High School Wildcat mascot from 1950-1952. Mr. Quickel passed away in 2023 in Arkansas. According to his obituary, the costume was made by a friend’s father, and he became the mascot primarily so he could travel with the marching band to away games—his future wife was a band member.
