NHS Drama Presents "The (ALMOST) Totally True Story of Hansel and Gretel"

Newark High School Drama’s upcoming performance of “The (Almost) Totally True Story of Hansel and Gretel” takes a familiar fairytale and twists it into something new, incorporating characters from other stories such as Snow White, the Three Bears and Streptococcus.

“I think the kids will like it, and I think parents will think it’s hilarious,” Director Susan Bowen said, adding that the production is entertaining and engaging for all age groups.

NHS drama will perform the play at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, and 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, in the Lawrence E. Griffin Performing Arts Center at Newark High School. Tickets are $5 for children and seniors, $8 for adults, and free admission for children under 3. Purchase tickets by clicking here.

“It all goes back to the theater department, so we can continue to put on bigger and better shows every time,” said Bowen.

The original Hansel and Gretel story has captivated audiences for years. This production tells a different side of the two characters, casting them is a less-than-flattering light.

The cast and crew members all work well together, and several point out their chemistry as a major strength. Sophomores Caleb Holmes and Paige Sistrunk are portraying the titular Hansel and Gretel.

“Their chemistry together is so strong, you’d almost think they are brother and sister,” said assistant director Kelsie Holden.
