Update on Student Use of Personal Communication Devices

Update on Student Use of Personal Communication Devices

A new state law passed earlier this year restricts student use of personal communication devices during the school day. This change will take effect as we begin the 2025-26 school year at all Newark City Schools buildings. Students in grades K-12 are provided with a school-issued Chromebook and any other technology resources needed during the school day.

What’s Changing

  • Students must keep all personal communication devices powered off, stored and out of sight during the school day
  • Devices may be used only if permitted by a student’s IEP or 504 plan, or to monitor a documented health condition.
  • Further exceptions for device use for instructional purposes may be authorized by the principal.

What Counts as a Personal Communication Device

  • Cell phones and smartphones
  • Smartwatches
  • Tablets, e-readers, laptops and computers
  • Gaming devices and other web-enabled tools used for communication

How to reach your student during the day

Please contact your student’s school office directly if you need to reach them during school hours.

Additional Information

Students who violate the policy will receive a disciplinary consequence from building administration. Your child’s school will have more information regarding building procedures related to device usage.
