Annual $10,000 award honoring NHS senior baseball players announced by Froelich family
Newark High School alumni Pam (Bays) and Dave Froelich have announced a $10,000 annual award for up to three Newark Varsity Baseball seniors. The award — “The Crimson Frog” — is designed to recognize players who exhibit exceptional performance in hustle, attitude, leadership, teamplay and sportsmanship.
The Froelichs — Pam, a 1964 NHS grad, and Dave, a 1963 NHS grad — are proud supporters of NHS and Wildcat baseball. Dave was a catcher for NHS, signed a bonus contract with the St. Louis Cardinals while attending Ohio State, was appointed a commission scout for St. Louis in 1993 and has been involved with amateur baseball for many years.
“We believe in giving back to our community by volunteering or contributing monetarily to local causes,” Pam said. “With Dave’s long involvement in baseball and both of us being NHS grads … it just seemed a natural fit.”
To be eligible for The Crimson Frog, awardees must be a senior with plans to attend college, and must attend a one-hour class on situational baseball in both his junior and senior years. The varsity baseball staff will judge the award.
“The Crimson Frog award will be a huge honor for all student athletes that earn this award in the future,” varsity baseball coach Mike Wheeler said. “I would also like to thank Pam and Dave for the help and support I have personally received as the baseball coach at Newark.”
Dave said he is excited to add to the great tradition our community has in giving back to others.
“We live in a county where generosity abounds,” he said. “Think Park National Bank, Lou and Gib Reese, Howard LeFever and countless others. We feel obligated to give back and are fortunate to be able to do so in a meaningful way.”
Newark High School is thankful for the Froelichs’ generosity and for their support of Wildcat baseball.
“I would like to thank Pam and Dave for their generosity,” Athletic Director Jeff Quackenbush said. “I appreciate them helping student-athletes further their education and being involved with Newark Athletics.”
