NHS Literary Magazine, Athenaeum, available now
NHS Literary Magazine, Athenaeum, available nowThe first edition of Athenaeum: The Newark High School Literary Magazine has been released, and is available for download here. The magazine has been led by student leaders and faculty advisor P.R. West. Athenaeum features poetry, essays, short stories, drama and artwork, each submitted by Newark High School students.

It will be submitted to the National Council of Teachers of English, or NCTE, Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines for senior high schools in June. The literary magazine will undergo a rigorous blind review process from a number of reviewers. A final decision and rating on the literary magazine will be given between December 2015 and January 2016. Ratings from highest to lowest are: Superior, Excellent, Above Average, and Unranked.

Students chose the name Athenaeum due to its multiple meanings, including "an institution for the promotion of literary or scientific learning." In student polling during the Fall of the 2014-15 academic year, the name Athenaeum was the second highest vote getter. Staff members also chose the name because it was easier to pronounce and seemed to reflect more of the literature than the original name Proxenus Atarneus -- which was more than a mouthful for all of us to pronounce.

Student staff members included: Madalyn Boucher, Sarina Lannan, Allison Nixon, Ayden Felix, Skylar Grimsley, Gaige Treadwell, Emma Vogelmeier, Kaitlyn Whipkey, and Miranda Woodgeard. Bethany Garrison was editor-in-chief.

Additional staff members, including Alex Kovach, Seth Roy, Rod Black, Kathy Lorenz, Lorraine Null and Melinda Bucholtz also advised the magazine in various ways.
