Newark High School freshman Steven Chiacchira won a billboard contest by creating a public service announcement to educate their peers about teen driver safety.

The Licking County Health Department and Licking County Safe Communities Coalition, through support from State Farm, sponsored the contest and chose Steven's design from many submissions.

The billboard will be displayed throughout Licking County during November. Steven also won a $500 prize, and NHS won $100 as the host school.

"I made my design more visual than text-heavy to safely catch the attention of drivers," Steven said. "I wanted to send the message in a way teens would relate to."

The contest required students to create a teen driver safety PSA that included seat belts, distracted driving, speed and peer pressure. Motor-vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens.
