March 15 NCS Community update - School closed March 16

Good evening Newark City Schools families, this is Superintendent Doug Ute:

As we continue through the coronavirus pandemic, information continues to change on a daily basis. We are all working together to try to make the best decisions for our students, staff members and community. The information is changing daily.

We have decided it is best for Newark City Schools to be closed tomorrow, Monday, March 16. We will continue instruction on March 30 through blended learning options, which will be communicated at a later time. The only staff members who will be reporting to school tomorrow will be essential staff for helping to feed children and clean buildings.

Our buildings will be open for students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow for students to pick up their materials in their lockers and classrooms if needed. Students can pick up grab-and-go meals at their home buildings between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you need meals, please enter the front of your child’s building. For Newark High School, the Commons and the Hub will both be available.

Currently, this is how meals will be served Monday through Friday this week. We will communicate further how we will be serving meals beyond Friday as we are able.

This is a time of great uncertainty. During the governor’s address today, the doctor emphasized the need for social distancing among all. The governor believes that our time out of school will last beyond these three weeks.

We will be continuing to monitor the governor’s expectations and will continue to communicate with our families during this time.

The education of your children is important to all of us, and we pledge to do our best during this tough situation to help all students receive an education.

Thank you, and have a good night.
